Chelsea Target Hamsik To Begin Napoli Contract Talks

Star midfielder Marek Hamsik is expected to discuss his contract situation with Napoli at the end of next month.

The 22-year-old has verbally agreed to extend his existing deal and all that's missing is his signature. Napoli have been in the process of tying down their stars over the last couple of months and Hamsik is the biggest prize.

Italian daily, Corriere dello Sport believes that given Hamsik is one of the most promising youngsters in Europe, his buy-out clause would be over €40m.

Hamsik has been a consistent performer in Serie A over the past several years and has scored 10 goals in 31 games so far this season and was seen as subject to a possible summer bidding war between Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan and his former club Chelsea. It had been rumoured that Hamsik will be part of a Chelsea summer spending spree to replace several members of the Blues' aging squad.

However, Hamsik's apparent desire to stay with Napoli means that a big move to Chelsea or anywhere else is unlikely to happen in the short-term.

Hamsik was recently voted Slovakian player of the year for 2009 and is expected to star for his country during this summer's World Cup.
